PROMISE VTrak A3800fD SAN-in-a-box + VTrak J830 JBOD
There are 24 4TB drives per unit for a total of 96TB raw capacity. This can be configured to yield 72TB usable capacity with RAID6 protection.
It has four file system licenses and 30 Mac client licenses. Up to four clients can be directly connected to the system without the need for a Fibre Channel switch. Any Thunderbolt™ capable Mac or PC can be connected using a SANLink Thunderbolt™ to 4Gb Fibre Channel adapter or Thunderbolt2 to 8Gb Fibre Channel adapter - or a PCIe FC card for MacPro and PC towers.
This A3800 comes with an 8Gb SFP [optical transceiver] in all 8 ports. We will include two new 10m FC cables as well. Also included is one SANLink-FC4 Thunderbolt2-to-4Gb Fibre Channel adapter and a 8-port NetGear GS108 Gigabit Ethernet switch to use on the metadata network.
Fibre Channel clients need to use the PROMISE VTrakFS client app, which is freely downloadable and is available for macOS 10.7 to the latest, and for Windows 7 and later. Various flavors of Linux are supported as well; refer to the PROMISE support pages for more information. Note: to connect a Windows or Linux client you would need to purchase a "Universal" client from PROMISE.
All this for only $18,500

The PROMISE warranty expired in 2017, but an Extended Warranty good until 2020 can be purchased that will cover the enclosures as well as the drives as they were provided by PROMISE. The MSRP for the A3800 + J830 4th and 5th year Extended Warranty is around $6500, and the 6th year is around $3800. You can get coverage for just A3800 for approximately half the price.
To have a running SAN, a few additional components are required:
- FC cables from each client to the A-Class
- Either a SANLink or FC HBA at each client with two SFPs
- A free network port or USB-GbE adapter on each client
- A network cable from each client back to the A-Class and metadata switch
- And - most important - a suitable room to put the gear in
We will do a pre-site review, configuration diagram, and onsite setup for only $2500 to get you up and running.
