Enterprise quality NVR Server/SAN storage solutions that are more resilient, more reliable and easier to sustain than NVR server solutions that use internal disk drives to store video

Traditional Network Video Recorders (NVRs) use the server's internal disk drives for storing surveillance video files and may support connection to an external a NAS device for capacity expansion. This traditional solution of having HDDs in the server has some weak points such as limited expansion capabilities requiring the addition of a JBOD (if the internal disk controller has an external port) and if the server goes down the data on the internal HDDs is unavailable. Most “enterprise” NVRs support a failover option where the video will be recorded at another storage location which will reconcile the file locations once operation of the failed NVR is restored, but until the issues are resolved the past recordings are not easily accessible.
The SAN-Storage solution
“...advanced data protection features that are independent of the servers so video can be accessed even if the server fails...”
The SAN-storage solution uses a 16Gb/s or 32Gb/s Fibre Channel connection that is point-to-point with no IP networking involved. Data is guaranteed to get from the server to the storage and with the very high data rate it can handle hundreds of cameras compared to 1Gb/s or 10Gb/s networking. SAN systems can have advanced data protection features that are independent of the servers and the video data can be accessed if a NVR server fails. Capacity expansion is very simple to do compared to the internal HDD model by adding disk expansion enclosures to the SAN system—which always has expansion ports. The SAN systems have the ability to use FC or 10Gb network ports to connect to remote SAN systems to provide synchronous or asynchronous data replication for High Availability and Disaster Recovery protection. This replication function resides on the SAN system so there is no software to install or manage on the NVR server.
The Enterprise Solution
“...NVR SAN storage solutions allow the servers to be set up as a cluster of recorders with one as a standby to take over if another fails...”
More resilient, easier to sustain, and offering more reliable access to stored surveillance video even if a server fails, NVR SAN storage systems are a true enterprise solution. They scale to meet growing recording and storage needs and have advanced data protection features that are independent of the server to keep your video safe and available when you need it.
